Count to One Hundred

Updated: Nov 17, 2018

I can't tell you how many times I opened my mouth and said something I wish I could take back. Thomas Jefferson said, "When you are angry, count to ten. When you are really angry count to one hundred." Why do we feel the need to blurt out whatever is on our mind? What could happen to our marriages if we used self control when speaking to one another? James 1:19 says, "be quick to hear, slow to speak..." The Bible calls it prudence. Prudence is the ability to govern or discipline yourself before speaking or acting. I've had to ask God for the self control to hold my tongue many times. Timing is everything. What if we waited and asked God for wisdom instead? What if we made the choice to count to 10 or 100, if need be. What if we prayed first, calmed down, and collected our thoughts so they came out gracious and kind, instead of harsh and accusing?

TRUTH TO PONDER: Do you see a man hasty in his words? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

DISCUSS TOGETHER: What is the most difficult challenge you have when trying to control your tongue? Why?

MAKE IT REAL: Was there something you said this week that was hurtful to your mate? Without being defensive, share it with your spouse and tell them you are sorry.
