Finding Your Sweet Spot

Updated: Nov 20, 2018

I thought I knew what love was...until I got married. No longer was it about me, me, me now it was about us. I had to think about someone else. I remember the first night after our honeymoon when my husband came home from work and asked me what we were having for dinner. I have to be honest. Inwardly, my first thought was, "Is he going to ask me to do this every night?"

(Dave) Yes please! I'll do breakfast for us, but can you please cook us a healthy dinner?

The Bible says, "Love does not demand it own way." Instead it gives out and pours out. My flesh grates against this because by nature I am selfish. But true love does not demand its own way. It finds a way to love well, serve well, and sacrifice well. We can't demonstrate to our spouse that they are valuable if we are demanding our own way. But marriage finds its sweet spot when selfishness gives way to sacrificial serving.

TRUTH TO PONDER: Love is patient and kind. It does not demand its own way. 1 Corinthians 13:4

DISCUSS TOGETHER: What did you find was the hardest adjustment going from single to married life?

TRY THIS: Share with your spouse what they do that makes you feel valued. This week do something to demonstrate to your spouse that they are worth it. It might not necessarily be an act of service - it might be quality time, a special gift or words of affirmation. Take the Five Love Languages Test (see Resources) this week and practice showing value to each other.
