It Takes Three to Have a Great Marriage

Updated: Nov 17, 2018

Several years ago, Amy and I were sitting in a Coffee Bean enjoying our Tea Latte, looking lovingly at each other, and laughing. The barista came over after a half hour and asked us, "What is the key to your marriage? You seem so happy." I (Dave) leaned over and said in a low voice, "Do you really want to know?" She said, "Yes, I do - my husband and I just got married and we're already having problems. " I answered with a slight grin, "The answer is a divine love triangle - It takes three to have a great marriage." After what seemed like an eternal pause, I said, "let me explain."

Then I drew a picture on a Coffee Bean napkin of husband and wife about two inches apart and above the two and between them I wrote God. I said, "You've got to place God right here as the third corner of the triangle." She still seemed a little confused. I continued, "You'll notice that as both husband and wife get closer to God above, they'll end up getting closer to each other as well! I could see the coin drop. Too many couples are trying to get close or stay close on their own, and inevitably they end up repelling each other or moving in different directions from each other. But when God is in the middle of it all, the two will inevitably end up gravitating toward each other! The barista got all excited and said, "I'm going to take this napkin home and show it to my husband - We're going to do this!"

TRUTH TO PONDER: A triple braided cord is not easily broken.

DISCUSS TOGETHER: What is the meaning of this verse? What is God's part in making your marriage strong? What is your part? How have you seen this in your own marriage?

TRY THIS: Ask your spouse what they need prayer for, and take time to pray for each other, and then ask God to be in the center of your marriage.
